Many councillors find staff appraisals daunting, but a good appraisal should be a positive and constructive conversation.

Our new Appraisal Skills course provides practical guidance for councillors involved in line management, staffing committees or staff appraisals. We'll explore objective setting, preparing for appraisal meetings, providing constructive feedback and handling difficult conversations professionally.

The aim is simple: helping councils support staff development whilst ensuring council objectives are achieved.

During the course, delegates will:

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of appraisals for both the council and the employee

  • Explore ways to address staff concerns and build confidence in the process

  • Learn how to plan and structure effective appraisal meetings

  • Develop an appraisal format tailored to their council

  • Create clear and practical action plans

  • Understand how appraisals support performance management

  • Ensure appraisals are conducted confidentially and in line with GDPR requirements

Who Should Attend
We would recommend that as a minimum, a representative from the council as the employer attends (i.e. a councillor) and for Clerks who manage staff.
