Bigger Fines Possible for Littering and Fly-Tipping
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced that on-the-spot fines for litter, graffiti and fly-tipping are set to rise. The upper limits for various fixed penalty notices (FPNs) will be increased as follows:
- Fly-tipping increased from £400 to £1,000
- Litter or graffiti increased from £150 to £500
- Breach of household waste duty of care increased from £400 to £600
The unitary councils will have the freedom to set the rates that offenders should pay, within the limits above. These changes will come into force on 31 July 2023.
