Neurodiversity Awareness
Course Description
Local government relies on strong collaboration between clerks, councillors, and officers—yet many tensions stem not from personality clashes but from neurological differences. With an estimated 15–20% of people being neurodivergent, almost every council team includes individuals whose brains process information differently. Understanding these differences can transform how local authorities function.
This course explores how neurodiversity influences thinking styles, communication, and behaviour within the unique context of local government. Participants will examine why the contrasting roles of clerks and councillors naturally align with neurodiverse strengths—and why these strengths can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.
The course emphasises the importance of neurodiversity awareness as a practical tool for reducing conflict, improving communication, and unlocking hidden talent within councils. Participants learn strategies for inclusive working—such as recognising sensory preferences, adapting communication styles, and supporting diverse cognitive approaches.
By the end of the course, learners will understand how embracing neurodiversity leads to:
-
More productive and innovative teams
-
Better decision‑making
-
Reduced workplace friction
-
Greater organisational resilience and community impact
